My Silent Bravery – “Amazing”
My Silent Bravery is Matthew Wade of the Boston, Massachusetts, Wades. Working diligently, he has built up the loyal fan base that supported 300 MSB shows in three years and even as he’s worked on the third MSB album, over the past year or so, Wade has been spreading the word even further by playing on bills with Ed Kowalczyk, Rusted Root, Howie Day, John Waite, The Wailers, and Candlebox.

Wade is just finishing up his next My Silent Bravery LP, Diamond From Coal, with producers Anthony J. Resta (Collective Soul, Elton John, Guster, Shawn Mullins) and Warren Huart (The Fray, Aerosmith, Augustana). MSB’s last CD, 2011’s Can’t Quit, was also produced by Resta; its three singles, including “To Give,” with Matisyahu, have collectively amassed over a million views on YouTube, with one video hitting #2 on YouTube’s Most Popular. Indie Music Digest gave an Album Of The Year nomination to Can’t Quit, and 500 or so radio stations across several formats played it.

On the lead single, “Amazing,” My Silent Bravery blends dance-pop with electronic ear candy and a sunny melody for a peppy, party song ready for one last end-of-summer blowout.

YOUNG ADULT MAGAZINE

Speaking with My Silent Bravery
My Silent Bravery isn’t your typical musical act. Matthew Wade is spiritual, dedicated and thoughtful in all that he does, particularly his music. This has allowed him to overcome a serious sports injury in his youth and pursue music full time. We spoke with him about spirituality, touring, Bob Marley, and working with Matisyahu.

Young Adult: Tell YA a little bit about yourself when you were younger…where did you grow up?

Matthew Wade: I was born in Boston, MA and moved out to Worcester, MA when I was in the second grade. I really enjoyed my youth and being outside playing any kind of sports with my friends. Growing up with four seasons helped mold me into a true New Englander and not to mention avid Boston sports fan!

YA: How did you get your start in music?

MW: I got my start in music my senior year of high school. For a senior project I chose to learn how to play the guitar and wrote my first song. It was a big turning point in my life, as it was one of the first times I felt like I was choosing what I wanted to learn about and explore. Ironically, the song I wrote called “Side of the Road” was featured on the hit TV show One Tree Hill several years later and was one of my first big achievements.

YA: What has been your biggest success to date?

MW: For me it’s a big success any time a fan tells me that they enjoyed one of my songs and how it has impacted their life either after a show or in an online comment. It is also pretty cool sharing the stage with lots of the acts that I grew up listening to. I am a huge Bob Marley and the Wailers fan and this past summer I was fortunate to share the stage with The Wailers. Their tour bus driver actually sat in on drums for a couple of songs in our set. It was a really fun and surreal night. I don’t know if it was my biggest success, but certainly one of the more meaningful accomplishments to me personally.

YA: Do you guys have a mentor? If so, tell us a little more about him/her.

MW: Music is actually one of the few areas in my life where I would say that I don’t have a mentor. Not having a mentor in this field has actually made me work extra hard. My booking agent, Matt, has been a great help to me in terms of helping me navigate the music world. In addition, I have lots of people that support and guide me in my life. My dad is a big mentor to me particularly in business and practical life matters. I think I can count on one hand the amount of times in my life he has been wrong. I also study kabbalah and have a teacher named Benjamin who has been a great guide on my spiritual path.

YA: Tell us a little bit more about working with Matisyahu.

MW: Matis is a super talented dude and I am appreciative for the opportunity to work with him and learned a lot from the experience. For me, “To Give”, is the most important song to date that I have written due to the message in the song. Having Matis on that track has really helped in terms of spreading that positive message to the masses and I am grateful for that.

YA: You tour a ton! Any favorite venues? Any favorite artists you’ve toured with?

MW: I really liked performing at the Chicken Box out on the island of Nantucket, MA. We did a three night stint there a few summers back and that place is wild. In addition to the Wailers, I have really enjoyed sharing the stage with artists like Howie Day, Ed Kowalczyk (Live), and Rusted Root to name a few. It is definitely a cool feeling playing with acts that I grew up listening to and I am really grateful for the opportunity to do so.

YA: Quick: Pick one adjective to describe yourself!

MW: Persistent

YA: Who are some of your favorite artists or bands?

MW: I love all kinds of music and am all over the map. In addition to Bob Marley and the Wailers, some of my favorites include Dave Matthews Band, Sublime, 311, Red Hot Chilipeppers, Pearl Jam, John Mayer, Eminem, and the list goes on.

YA: Who would you most like to work with?

MW: There are so many talented people out there I would love to work with. All of the artists that I list above would be a great place to start. I think it would be particularly interesting to work with Eminem. He is a lyrical genius.

YA: What do you have coming up?

MW: I am really excited to release my fourth album in the next few months and then tour behind it. The album is called, Diamond from Coal, features 12 tracks, and is produced by Anthony Resta (Collective Soul, Elton John, Guster) and Warren Huart (Aerosmith, The Fray, James Blunt). I just released the first single and video for a song called, Amazing, and am excited that MTV.com just picked it up!

YA: What can you tell others pursuing the same career?

MW: Follow your dreams. Keep pushing yourself and surround yourself with people who believe in you!

YA: What are your favorite books or what books are you currently reading?

MW: I love reading spiritual books. I am currently reading The Way of the Kabbalist by Yehuda Berg and The Universal Garden of Emuna by Rabbi Shalom Arush. There is such profound life information in both of these books and I can’t recommend them enough!

YA: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 10?

MW: Good question?! I try and focus on the present. I just hope to keep on the path of personal transformation and to be a better human being and musician with each passing day.

YA: What are three things you want your fans to know about you that they might not?

MW: Huge Boston sports fan – Pats, Celts, B’s and Sox. Hoping the Sox take the World Series! I am 6-1 in my Fantasy Football league much in part to the great play of Payton Manning and I am a little conflicted about that. Favorite movie series are the Rocky movies. They still inspire me every time. Yo Adrian!

POPCULTUREZ

PopCulturez Q&A Friday: My Silent Bravery – Pop-Rocking to a Fourth Full-Length
PopCulturez.Com: Welcome to PopCulturez, can you start by introducing yourself and explaining the reason behind your name?

Hi PopC! I am Matthew Wade and perform under the moniker ‘My Silent Bravery.’ My old band performed under a name with the initials MSB so, when I revamped a few years back, I wanted to keep those initials intact, along with the fan base. A friend of mine suggested My Silent Bravery, and I thought the name suited my style and sound, so I rolled with it.

To me, the name symbolizes inner strength, persistence, and perseverance. I feel it is part of my life’s mission to help deliver a positive message to the masses. I feel that music is one of the best ways to do this. The band name also helps serve as a reminder to stay focused on that mission and stay positive!

PopCulturez.Com: You are preparing for the release of your fourth album, what can you tell us about that, and does it have an official release date?

I am very excited to release my fourth album.  I like to think it’s a testament to my perseverance. The LP is entitled, ‘Diamond from Coal,’ taken from a line in one of the songs on the album. The album is produced by Anthony Resta (Collective Soul, Elton John, Guster) and Warren Huart (Aerosmith, The Fray, Augustana) and presently sits with 12 tracks; 11 originals and my first recorded cover song.

No official release date yet, still getting some last minute things together, but I hope to have it out by the beginning of 2014. I have released the first single and video from the album, entitled ‘Amazing.’  The video was directed by Vassili Shields and features MTV’s Cara Maria.

PopCulturez.Com: For those yet to hear your music, how would you describe you sound, and who inspired you musically?

I usually describe my sound as acoustic driven pop/rock with a positive message. I have a lot of musical inspirations including Bob Marley, Dave Matthew Band, 311, Sublime, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam… and the list goes on and on.

PopCulturez.Com:  With so much competition around these days, what do you think it takes stand out from the crowd?

I think everyone is trying to figure that out. In the end, I think it comes down to perseverance, staying true to yourself and, of course, having a great song. Most of the acts to hit it big, didn’t do it overnight: It took them 10 years or so, and then had a bigger opportunity that became their tipping point.

I have learned that there are a lot of things I can’t control in the music business. But one thing that I can control is the music I put out there, so I try to release music that I am proud of, that is substantive, and that has a positive message.

PopCulturez.Com: You have performed over 300 shows, what is it about the live arena that you love so much?

I love connecting with the fans in a live setting. When I perform, I draw a lot of energy from the crowd and vice versa. I like that it is a unique moment in time, and an experience that you are sharing with those in attendance.

I didn’t always love performing to be honest. It took those 300 shows in 3 years to get me to a place where I now really enjoy it. It was trial by fire for me. Learning what I liked, what I didn’t, and what seemed to engage the crowd.

PopCulturez.Com: Aside from radio airplay and live performance, your music has also reached listeners through placement on a number of TV shows. Can you tell us about what it is about this avenue that appeals to you?

I really like having my music featured in TV. I think one of my biggest strengths as an artist is my songwriting, and capturing an emotion, mood, or feeling with a song. I love when my music is featured to help capture a moment on TV. I also think it’s a good exposure opportunity to get in front of a lot of people where you can also earn some income doing it.

PopCulturez.Com: If fans want to connect with you further, where can they catch you, either in-person or online?

Fans can connect with me on www.mysilentbravery.com, and all other social networks via @mysilentbravery including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, etc.

I really appreciate my fans and love to hear their feedback on what I am doing. I do my best to answer and engage with everyone, so please do add me @mysilentbravery and drop a line via your preferred favorite social network!

As far as in person, I will have some-one off shows coming up in New England this fall, and plan to line up some tour dates once the new album is released.

PopCulturez.Com: Thanks for your time, but before we go, is there anything more that you would like to add?

I would like to thank you guys for the interview and for your support. It is greatly appreciated.  I would like to thank my fans for their continued love and support.

I feel blessed to be putting out my fourth album!  For those who have yet to hear My Silent Bravery- please go and check it out now!

ROCK YOUR LYRICS.

Rock Your Lyrics: Exploring Lyrics with My Silent Bravery
My Silent Bravery (https://mysilentbravery.com) is about to release its new album “Diamond from Coal”….. its first single “Amazing” is obtaining a great success.

Matthew Wade answered to our questions…….

RYL: What is the most important thing in writing lyrics?

My Silent Bravery: I’m not sure I know the answer to that question, haha. I am learning new things all the time. For me, each song is a story, and I try to tell the story to the best of my ability. I then hope listeners will connect with the story and be drawn into it and relate emotionally and how it applies in their own lives.

RYL: How do you usually write the verses of your songs?

My Silent Bravery: I generally just kind of start stream of consciousness writing until some more concrete ideas come for what the song is really going to be about or what I really want to say. The verses are usually the back drop of the song for me. They tell you who, what, when, where, while the chorus is usually more about the why.

RYL: Your last album “Can’t Quit” was released one year ago; which is the main message that you wanted to give with it?

My Silent Bravery: The main message behind the Can’t Quit album is overcoming obstacles particularly in the face of adversity. I elaborate on this idea through the album artwork.

The front cover art is a Koi fish and on the back is a dragon and the interior lyrics are part of that transformation taking place from the Koi to the dragon.

In the liner notes, there is a cool quote that helps describe the message and artwork. “According to Japanese legend if a koi succeed in climbing the falls to Dragon Gate on the Yellow River it would be transformed into a dragon.

Based on the legend, it became a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement. The Japanese associate koi with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. Because of its strength and determination to overcome obstacles, it stands for courage and the ability to attain high goals”.

RYL: What inspired the lyrics of the song “Burnt Out”?

My Silent Bravery: That song was inspired by a relationship that wasn’t working out and just feeling exhausted trying to keep it going. We often hang on to the past in relationships and are not living in the present. I think the line at the end of the song best sums it up, “Why would you hold onto the match if the flame has gone out?”

RYL: and “Can’t Quit”?

My Silent Bravery: Can’t Quit was inspired by my arduous uphill battle that is the music industry. That was my struggle on that day and many days for that matter.

However, the message in the song was meant for a much broader audience. It’s meant for anyone facing a challenge to relate to, whatever struggle they are going through. It’s meant to encourage and inspire the listener to push through their challenge.

RYL: Explain to us the meaning for you of “Today is tomorrow’s yesterday”.

My Silent Bravery: That is a pretty deep song. I wrote the song on New Year’s Eve some years back when a gig I was hoping to land didn’t pan out. To me it’s a song about reflecting on the past, looking ahead to the future, and being in the moment all at once. I thought the song title helped to reflect that sentiment.

RYL: “Amazing” is your new single released two months ago that is obtaining a huge success, MTV is playing the video, a lot of media they talk about it… what does it represent for you?

My Silent Bravery: It’s amazing the great feedback that “Amazing” has been getting! It’s the first single off the new album so it’s nice to have some new energy out there. To me, the song is about making the most out of what you’ve been given.

You have to embrace whatever comes your way and enjoy the moment without the expectation of what you have in your mind. When things don’t go your way you have to kind of think that that maybe that’s the way they were supposed to go and make the best of the situation, make it amazing!

RYL: Touring is essential to promote your own music, until today which was the best show of your life?

My Silent Bravery: There are a couple shows that come to mind. I am a big Bob Marley and the Wailers fan. This past summer I had the honor of sharing the stage and hanging with the Wailers which was a surreal experience for me.

We even had their tour bus driver sneak in a few songs on drums during our set. It was a really fun and surreal night!

Another great experience that comes to mind is three night stint at a venue on Nantucket called the Chicken Box. That place is wild!

RYL: How was to work with the producer Anthony Resta (Elton John, Duran Duran, Blondie….)?

My Silent Bravery: I love working with Anthony or AJ as I call him. He is a super talented and creative guy.

He also works with, Karyadi Sutedja, who is one of the best engineers I have worked with as well. I have recoded probably around 20 tracks with those guys, and I love working with them and value the quality of the tracks that I end up with. It’s like we continually try to outdo ourselves and make each new track the best one to date. It’s a great and rewarding challenge.

RYL: What is your next goal? And challenge?

My Silent Bravery: I am really excited to release my fourth album in the next few months and then tour behind it. The album is called, Diamond from Coal, features 12 tracks, and is produced by Anthony Resta (Collective Soul, Elton John, Guster) and Warren Huart (Aerosmith, The Fray, James Blunt). The goal and the challenge will be to reach as many listeners as possible so I appreciate Rock Your Lyrics helping me start on that goal right away! Thanks so much!

Hard Work Pays Off for My Silent Bravery Frontman
It seems like just yesterday that Matthew Wade was playing small singer-guitarist sets at Jose Murphy’s. But in just a few short years, the Worcester native has found himself on a remarkable career trajectory, the next point of which is a slot performing with his band, My Silent Bravery, for the fifth annual WXLO Acoustic Xmas at Mechanics Hall, alongside headliner Daughtry, folk-rock band Delta Rae and “American Idol” finalist Erika Van Pelt.

“It’s going to be my first time sharing a stage with all those acts,” says Wade, whose real name is Matt Shwachman. “I’m very excited to play my hometown for the show, with those acts, at Mechanics Hall.”

Wade, who has been a member of Mechanics Hall’s board of directors for a year and a half, is performing with a trio-arrangement of My Silent Bravery, alongside former OSB members Kevin Hennessey on keyboards and Aaron Tringuk percussion, promising “an acoustic sounding set.”

It’s not Wade’s first foray with big names. In recent years, he’s opened for a number of big acts, including Howie Day, Candlebox and Rusted Root. Moreover, his songs have appeared on TV shows such as “One Tree Hill,” “Last Call with Carson Daly” and MTV’s “Real World.” My Silent Bravery’s recent video, “Amazing,” is being played on MTV.com.

“I think that it has to do with a lot of hard work and persistence,” says Wade, when asked how he’s managed to get so far in the music business in just a few years. He attributes a lot of his drive to a sports injury he incurred in 2001, while traveling in Australia, where he hurt his neck and back. According to Wade, that time spent recovering helped him to get more in touch with his spiritual side and, from there, commit himself to his passion for music.

“I just threw myself in,” he said. Within a few years, he went from playing local acoustic gigs to playing with a band — at one point called The Matt Shwachman Band, or MSB, which is where My Silent Bravery derives its name. “We played about 330 shows in four years — half covers, half originals.”

Eventually, Wade’s interest in writing original music outweighed his desire to play covers, and perhaps not inconsequently, that’s when his career began to accelerate.

Early next year, My Silent Bravery will release its new album, “Diamonds for Coal,” along with a video for the album’s second single (after “Amazing”), “On My Side.” And in another bit of synchronicity, the video was also filmed at Mechanics Hall.

“It feels like a lot of things coming full circle,” he says.

“It’s exciting for me,” he says of his musical journey. “For me, it shows the hard work and progress … I’m starting to get to some of those goals that I set for myself. It’s possible, y’know? If you put your mind to it and work hard, you can make your dreams come true.”
